Book recommendations: Pastor Bruce's Posted 12.09.2015

This week we will be featuring book recommendations from each of our Peninsula pastors. Whether you are Christmas shopping for a book lover or looking for something to read, we hope you enjoy their book lists.

Here are Pastor Bruce's book recommendations:

As the new year approaches I thought having devotional suggestions may be beneficial. Paul Tripp's devotional came out last year but I'm going through it again this year because it is to good. In fact, my kids may end up with their own copy under the tree! Laura and I loving going through the Rainey devotional for couples as it kept us talking about important marriage and family issues. Finally, I recommend the Long Story Short devotional for families. These devotionals can be modified to work for whatever age kids you have.

Personal:  New Morning Mercies: A Daily Gospel Devotional by Paul David Tripp

Marriage:   Moments Together for Couples: 365 Daily Devotions for Drawing Near to God & One Another by Dennis and Barbara Rainey
Family:   Long Story Short: Ten-Minute Devotions to Draw Your Family to God by Marty Machowski

I am always on the lookout for good parenting books. Here are a few that I really enjoyed reading and have referred back to again and again.

Age of Opportunity: A Biblical Guide to Parenting Teens by Paul David Tripp
Shepherding A Child's Heart by Ted Tripp

Give Them Grace: Dazzling Your Kids with the Love of Jesus by Elyse M Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson

I contend that most of us got married for the wrong reasons. We got married because of what that person does for me. "They make me feel loved and safe."  "They make me laugh."  "I love being with them."  Why not consider one of these books to help you get a good, biblical view of marriage and see how that works itself out in practical ways.

Sacred Marriage: What If God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than to Make Us Happy? by Gary Thomas
Best book for understanding God's perspective on Marriage: What Did You Expect?: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage by Paul David Tripp

The Jesus Storybook Bible helps children discover that Jesus is at the center of God's great story of salvation—and at the center of their story too. This would work great for family devotions.

Big Truths for Young Hearts helps parents understand the theology of the Bible is ways they can communicate it to their children. Love this book!

The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name by Sally Lloyd-Jones
Big Truths for Young Hearts: Teaching and Learning the Greatness of God by Bruce A Ware
