Serve it up update Posted 7.29.2011

You may or may not know that for three days a group of our high school students are serving others this week.  Today we spent an entire, very full and long, day in downtown LA.  We started the day heading out to the LA food bank and helped "glean" mixed palettes of food donations to prepare them for delivery to programs and individuals around the greater Los Angeles area.

We enjoyed lunch at Grand Central Market (after a longer than expected walk - but we got to see a scene of a movie being filmed!) and then headed to the Watts Towers for devotional time and discussion.  We headed back to the heart of downtown to serve at Union Rescue Mission.  They serve four separate dinner shifts (men involved in their rehabilitation program, families, single women, single men), which our students served enthusiastically at for three hours.  We all plopped into the van and headed to the place with the BEST chicken I've ever had - La27th Nicaraguan restaurant on Pico blvd.  We wrapped up the evening driving through parts of the city of a sort of prayer tour.  We all were struck by the closeness of great wealth in the city living literally one block over from the homeless lining the streets in tents, sleeping bags, and other makeshift beds on the streets.

It raised our awareness and drew us to the truth that the only real hope in this life is the hope that is offered from God in Christ.  Keep praying that we continue to play our small part in bringing the love of Christ to people in real and tangible ways.

Pastor Jeff
